I just got back from my first run in the Hoka Skyward X 2. Here are my initial thoughts worth sharing before I put more miles on them.

Hoka Skyward X 2 Fit and Sizing: Why You Should Size Up

The first thing I noticed, and it's significant, is that this shoe runs really small. Not just in length, but in width and toe box volume too. I'd definitely recommend going up a half size to get it fitting right. This is the kind of fit issue that can make or break the experience, so if you're ordering online, factor that in.

That said, the new upper is a real upgrade. Hoka swapped the original's knit upper for a premium jacquard mesh, and you can feel the difference. The zonal padded tongue with the lace loop is a nice touch, too. The lockdown feels dialed in, assuming you've got the sizing right.

What's New in the Hoka Skyward X 2 vs. the Original Skyward X

On paper, the updates are pretty targeted: Hoka shaved a little weight (down to 11.0 oz in a men's 10, from 11.3 oz), reworked the carbon fiber plate to be more aggressive and put you in a more engaged stance, and trimmed some stack height. The midsole foam combo PEBA over super-critical EVA stays the same, and so does the 5mm drop.

Hoka Skyward X 2 Ride and Performance on the Run

In practice, the Skyward X 2 feels a bit faster than the original, but I wouldn't call it a fast shoe. At 11 ounces, it's still heavy, though I'll give Hoka credit, it doesn't feel like 11 ounces underfoot. The ride leans almost more toward a Clifton feel than the original Skyward X did, just with a more propulsive plate underneath. It also feels a touch softer than v1, which surprised me given the spec sheet says the foam package is identical.

Who Should Buy the Hoka Skyward X 2?

Here's how I'd slot it into a rotation:

If you're a faster runner who wants a heavily cushioned daily trainer for long, easy miles, this fits the bill. With proper sizing, I'd reach for it on long runs and recovery days. For anything upbeat or workout-paced, I'd want something lighter and more nimble.

If you're newer to running or you want one shoe that does a lot, the Skyward X 2 is a strong max-cushion option. It's plush enough for everyday miles but has enough plate-driven pop to handle race day in a 10K or half marathon if that's where you're at.

What it's not: a true uptempo shoe. Don't buy this expecting a racer.

Hoka Skyward X 2 Review: Final Verdict

At $225, the Skyward X 2 sits in premium super trainer territory, and it earns the price for the right runner. The plate update and lighter upper are real improvements over v1, and the cushioning is genuinely impressive without going full marshmallow. Just size up half a size, and know what you're buying: a plush, plate-assisted cruiser for easy and long days, not a shoe you'll reach for when you want to run fast.

I'll have more to say after I put serious mileage on them, but as a first impression, Hoka's moving the Skyward line in a good direction.

Hoka Skyward X 2 FAQ

Does the Hoka Skyward X 2 run small?

Yes. The Skyward X 2 runs small in length, width, and toe box volume. I recommend sizing up a half size from your usual Hoka size for a proper fit.

How much does the Hoka Skyward X 2 weigh?

The Skyward X 2 weighs 11.0 oz in a men's size 10 and 9.1 oz in a women's size 8 — about 0.3 oz lighter than the original Skyward X.

What's the difference between the Skyward X and Skyward X 2?

The Skyward X 2 has a more aggressive carbon fiber plate that puts you in a more engaged stance, a lighter overall weight, a slightly lower stack height, and a new premium jacquard mesh upper (replacing the original's knit upper). The PEBA and super-critical EVA midsole foam combo stays the same.

Is the Hoka Skyward X 2 a good race day shoe?

It can work as a race day shoe for newer runners or those tackling longer distances at easier paces, but it's not a true racer. At 11 oz, it's too heavy for most runners to use for fast efforts. Consider it more of a long run and daily trainer than a 10K or half marathon racer.

What is the heel-to-toe drop of the Skyward X 2?

The Skyward X 2 has a 5mm heel-to-toe drop, the same as the original Skyward X.

How much does the Hoka Skyward X 2 cost?

The Skyward X 2 retails for $225, the same price as the original Skyward X.

Is the Hoka Skyward X 2 worth it?

For runners who want a max-cushion daily trainer with a propulsive plate for long, easy miles, yes. The improvements over v1 — better upper, more aggressive plate, slightly lighter — justify the $225 price. If you're looking for a fast, nimble shoe for workouts or short races, look elsewhere.
